Who says you can’t change an awkwardly shaped, long narrow garden into an contemporary courtyard garden design – into a chic outside room?
At the beginning of 2011 my clients asked me to create an outdoor space for cooking, eating and relaxing. It was to be an extension of their contemporary kitchen extension on the rear of their 1888 Victorian terraced house in Cale Green, Stockport, Cheshire. It was to include an eating area, built in bbq and a sitting area for outdoor sofa and chairs. The planting palette was to be green, white and purple. The brief was also to disguise the ugly garden fencing and create a small utility area.The whole space had to be low maintenance too.
The plot is 17m long, 4.5m wide near the house tapering to only 2.5m at the bottom of the garden. My client had definate design ideas for how the garden should look and these were taken on board in the design process.
