My client is disabled and has difficult negotiating steps. His brief was for a very modern garden which didn’t look as though it was for a disabled person as he was thinking ahead for when he sold the house. He requested raised planting borders which he could tend sitting down, a small lawn and a pergola for shade. He required a good sized paved area for a bbq and table and chairs. The design provided for a paved area immediately outside the kitchen door. A stainless steel balustrade and handrail for safety, a modern aluminium and timber pergola was erected with space for a small seat beneath. Raised planting beds were built in blocks, topped with dark grey granite setts and faced with silver granite to match the paving. A stabilised gravel system was used on the lower level. The utility fencing with the neighbour was replaced with a contemporary style cedar fence and modern stainless steel downlights were installed on the fencing and walls. The planting is architectural and low maintenance.
